Pakistan's share of renewables in power generation will reach 30% by 2030

The Pakistan Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) has approved proposals from the Ministry of Energy for all future renewable energy projects to be treated under the Renewable Energy Policy 2019. It has also outlined plans to boost the share of renewable energy (i.e. from wind, solar, small hydro and biomass plants) in the total domestic power generation to 30% by 2030. Pakistan would then have to raise its renewable capacity to 18,000 MW by 2030, to reach this 30% target.

In 2017, Pakistan generated 2% of its power from renewables, not including large hydropower, which covers around 1/4 of the power mix. The government also plans to raise the share of hydropower in the power mix to 30% by 2030, which would translate into an overall share of renewable energy of 60% in the power mix by 2030.

In January 2019, the government suggested a five-year exemption from taxes related to solar and wind equipment manufacturing in the country. The tax exemption would boost the production of equipment and new renewable capacity. The government has already considerably reduced taxes on imported renewable technology for the same purpose as 95% of solar panels are currently imported.
