Mitsubishi Power, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has completed the construction of a 5.3 GW CCGT power plant project in Thailand. The project, led by a JV between Mitsui and the Thai holding company Gulf Energy Development, marks Mitsubishi Power's largest-ever completed order by capacity.
The project consists of two CCGT power plants located in the Chonburi and Rayong Provinces, each equipped with four M701JAC gas turbines, steam turbines, and heat recovery steam generators. These advanced gas turbines boast a power generation efficiency of 64%, reducing fuel costs and carbon emissions. Upon commencement of full commercial operations on 1 October 2024, the first seven installed units collectively logged 100,000 actual operating hours.
Mitsubishi Power completed similar projects such as Nong Saeng and U Thai CCGT plants in 2014 and 2015, respectively, and another CCGT plant order from Hin Kong Power in 2020 in Thailand.
Natural gas is by far the first energy source for power generation (67% in 2023) in Thailand.
