The Indian Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has approved the construction of two pumped-storage hydropower plants totalling 2.6 GW of capacity. They include the 2,000 MW Sharavathy project, being developed by KPCL in the State of Karnataka (southern India), and the 600 MW Upper Indravati project, developed by OHPC in Odisha State (eastern India). These approvals are part of the government's initiative to fast-track the development of renewable energy. The CEA also said it is processing around 60 GW of proposals for pumped-storage projects, which are currently under various stages of survey and investigation.
In 2021, India announced plans to add 79 hydropower projects with a total capacity of 30 GW, including 11 pumped-storage projects totalling 8.7 GW, during the period 2019-2020 to 2029-30. As of end-2023, hydropower accounted for 10% of India's total capacity, with over 52 GW (including 4.8 GW of pumped-storage hydro).
