According to the German Solar Industry Association, Germany reached 100 GW of solar capacity at the end of 2024, approaching nearly half of the 215 GW goal set for 2030. The association estimated that solar capacity covered around 14% of the country’s energy consumption in 2024 (12% in 2023), according to data from the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA).
The country commissioned about 17 GW of new solar capacity, representing a 10% increase from the 15.4 GW installed in 2023. Ground-mounted solar power plants showed the highest year to year growth (+40% to 6.3 GW), with the capacity of solar power systems on company roofs rising by 25% (+3.6 GW) and that of plug-in solar devices ("balcony power plants") doubling (+0.4 GW); meanwhile the growth of solar power systems on residential roofs slowed down in 2024 (+6.7 GW).
The association recommended the German government to dismantle market barriers and ensure an attractive regulatory framework to increase investment in the sector.
