Generadora Metropolitana inaugurates a 480 MW solar project in northern Chile

Generadora Metropolitana, a joint venture of the Chilean company AME and the French group EDF, has inaugurated the 480 MW CEME1 solar PV project in Chile. The CEME 1 is located at 7 km from the city of María Elena in the Antofagasta Region, in northern Chile. With 882,720 panels from the Chinese manufacturer JA Solar, deployed in an area of 435 ha in a fixed structure, the project expects to produce enough energy to supply 500,000 households and to avoid the emission of 280 ktCO2/year. Generadora Metropolitana is also working in the installation of more than 1.2 GWh of batteries to store the energy produced by the project.

At the end of 2023, Chile had a total installed capacity of 38 GW, of which solar accounted for 9 GW (24%); solar also covered 19% of the total power generation in the country in 2023.
