Australia approves two solar power plants (800 MW) in Queensland and NSW

The Australian government has approved two solar power plants with a combined power capacity of 800 MW. The projects are the 450 MW Goulburn River Solar Park in the state of Queensland and the 350 MW Sixteen Mile Solar Project near Chinchilla in Queensland.

The 450 MW Goulburn River Solar Park is located near Merriwa between the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) and the Hunter-Central Coast REZ and will have direct access to the existing electricity transmission network. The project should generate enough energy to power 191,000 homes and it includes the construction of 1 million solar panels, a battery storage system (BESS) and local road upgrades.

The 350 MW Sixteen Mile Solar Project is comprised of 579,660 solar panels and a 120 MW battery storage system and it plans to be connected to the existing Western Downs Substation to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 650 kt/year.

Australia has approved 63 renewable energy projects in the past two years, and enough projects to power over 7 million homes with clean energy. At the end of 2023, Australia had over 11 GW of wind capacity, 100% of it onshore (11% of its installed capacity and power generation in 2023).
