Energy Efficiency in Transport: Successes and Failures

Transport is widely recognized as one of the most difficult sector for improving energy efficiency and slowing energy demand growth, as part of the problem is beyond energy efficiency policy measures.

transport consumption decoupled from economic growth

While in many OECD countries demand has been decreasing, partly because of these measures and partly because of the economic downturn, in emerging countries transport energy demand is still growing rapidly, driven by the increase in traffic of goods and passengers and modal shift to road transport.

large potential growth

Most G20 countries have so far focused on improving the energy efficiency of cars. Indeed energy consumption in transport is decreasing since 2000 in G7, and this is mostly due to greater diffusion of more efficient road vehicles driven by the implementation of various regulations and incentive measures.

The purpose of this webinar was to review the various policy measures implemented in the transport sector at EU level and in G20 countries (minimum energy performance standards, labels, promotion of modal shifts, etc.) and to relate them to the trends observed in terms of energy demand growth and of energy efficiency improvements.
