Ukraine targets 60% of nuclear in its power mix

According to the Ukrainian president, the share of nuclear power in Ukraine's power mix is growing toward 60%, from more than 48% in 2014 to more than 53% in 2015. The date when the 60% target will be met remains unclear. This rising share in nuclear power is expected to cut the country's coal consumption from ageing coal-fired power plants (22 GW of coal-fired power capacity in 2015, of which nearly half is due to shut down).

In September 2016, Ukraine's state-owned nuclear operator Energoatom signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) to resume the construction of two reactors at the Khmelnitski nuclear plant. The Khmelnitski nuclear plant consists of two 950 MW (1,000 MW gross) reactors, whose construction started in 1981 and 1985, respectively and that started operations in 1988 and 2005. Energoatom had also started the construction of two similar reactors in 1986 and 1987 but suspended works in 1990; unit-3 was 75% complete and unit-4 28% complete. Ukraine's 2006 strategy envisions completing the construction of Khmelnitski-3 and 4. The units are not expected to be completed before 2020.

Ukraine is also cooperating with Poland and China to modernise its energy companies; in March 2015, Energoatom, Ukrainian state-owned power distribution company Ukrenergo and Polenergia signed an MoU on a project to export electricity via European grids.
