Switzerland's final energy consumption dropped by 7.7% in 2014

According to the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, final energy consumption fell by 7.7% in 2014, to 826,770 TJ (20 Mtoe), a 17-year low, due to warm temperatures (heating days decreased by 20% compared to 2013). This led to a lower energy consumption for heating purposes: extra-light heating oil consumption fell by 25%, gas consumption by more than 11% and electricity consumption by 3.1%.

However, consumption of energy from industrial waste and from coal increased (+13% and +4.2%, respectively). Consumption of heavy types of heating oil fell by 57%, and that of petroleum coke rose by 18%. In the transport sector, vehicle fuel consumption decreased by 0.5% compared to 2013; gasoline sales continued to decrease (-4%) to the advantage of diesel (+2.5%), following a trend observed since 2001.

Where renewables are concerned, the consumption of wood for heating fell by nearly 15% (-7.6% for heat pump energy consumption and -8.9% for district heating consumption), while solar heating consumption rose by 8.3%.
