Sindh EPA approves nuclear reactor construction restart in Pakistan

The Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has approved the environmental impact assessment (EIA) report for the construction of two nuclear reactors, K-2 and K-3, of 1,100 MW each on the site of the existing Karachi nuclear power plant (Kanupp). The Karachi Coastal-1-2 project is developed by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and construction contracts have been signed with Chinese companies (CNNC, China Zhongyuan Engineering, China Nuclear Power Engineering, Nuclear Power Institute of China and East China Electric Power Designing Institute).

Construction had started in late October 2013 and was suspended by a ruling from the Sindh High Court in October 2014, considering that the nuclear project was too closed to the city and that the evacuation area (5 km) was too limited. The SEPA has now allowed the PAEC to build the two reactors on the same site, at Paradise Point (near Kanupp), without changing the evacuation area, paving the way for the construction to resume.
