NPCIL plans to generate 60 GW of nuclear power in India by 2032

Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) plans to increase tenfold its nuclear capacity over the next two decades, reaching 60,000 MW by 2032. Currently 20 nuclear reactors are operational in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat with a total capacity of 4,780 MW. NPCIL is building seven nuclear reactors, including two 1,000 MW units at Kundankulam in Tamil Nadu (first unit expected to be commissioned by the end of 2013 and second unit by June 2014) and four PHWR units (two plants of 2x700 MW) in Rawatbhata in Rajasthan and Kakrapar in Gujarat. While both the units at Kakrapar were scheduled for commercial operation by December 2015, the Rawatbhata project was expected to be commissioned by December 2016. NPCIL is also planning a nuclear plant in Haryana, where the land acquisition process is underway, and construction is expected to start before 2015.
