The Netherlands will double support to renewable energy in 2016

The Government of the Netherlands plans to more than double the financial support to renewable energy sources in 2016 through its feed-in premium scheme auction mechanism called SDE+. From €3.5bn in 2014 and 2015, the 2016 version of the SDE+ will be granted of €8bn to fund renewable energy projects.

SDE+ 2016 will provide 2 bidding rounds of €4bn (from 1 March to 31 March and from 30 August to 29 September) which will be split in four weeks each. During round 1, projects with power generation costs of up to €90/MWh will be awarded, then, the settlement will gradually opened up to more expensive projects to €110/MWh, €130/MWh and €150/MWh. During the opening of the SDE+, applicants have the option to submit their projects in the so-called free category.

The SDE+ 2015 budget of €3.5bn has been fully awarded to194 renewable energy projects and was oversubscribed with a total of €7.7bn grant requested.

A part from the €8bn budget commitments for the SDE+ 2016, the Netherlands has also budgeted €5bn for the tenders of offshore wind plots I and II of the Borssele area.

As part of the national Energy Agreement, the partners have committed themselves to achieving 14% renewable energy by 2020 and 16% in 2023.
