Lithuania and Romania approve fracking option for shale gas E&P

Romania and Lithuania are following Ukraine in approving the use of "fracking" in shale gas exploration.

The new Romanian government elected in December 2012 has decided to support shale gas exploration and to reverse the suspension of Chevron from shale gas exploration activities enacted in April 2012. The next step for Chevron is to obtain a construction permit before it can start exploratory drilling. In Lithuania, Chevron received presidential support for shale gas exploration, despite parliamentarian and environmentalist opposition.

These decisions follow the license awarded to Shell in Ukraine, and reveal a strong commitment to avoid energy domination from Gazprom.
