Indian power companies will import 73 Mt of coal in FY2016

According to estimates by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) of India, 37 power generation companies will import a total of 73 Mt of coal in the fiscal year 2016 (April 2015-March 2016). State-owned power generation companies will import a total of 52 Mt (70% of total dry fuel imports by power firms in the current fiscal year), with NTPC accounting for 30% of total coal imports from the power sector over this period (22 Mt). Private power generation utilities will import more than 21 Mt: Adani will import 4.7 Mt, while Reliance will import 2.6 Mt.

Meanwhile, state-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) expects to raise its coal production to 550 Mt in 2015-2016 and to later boost it to 1 Gt; this target seems ambitious, as the company only produced 494 Mt in 2014-2015, missing its target to produce 507 Mt.

According to preliminary data, India's coal imports soared by more than 33% in the last fiscal year (2014-2015).
