India unveils state target for rooftop solar capacity by 2022

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) of India has released a tentative breakdown of solar capacity targets by states to reach its overall 40 GW rooftop solar target by 2022. India should add 5 GW of solar capacity by the end of fiscal year 2016-2017 (by March 2017), including 200 MW by March 2016 and the remaining 4.8 GW in 2016-2017. Capacity additions would then have to accelerate, to 5 GW in 2017-2018, 6 GW in 2018-2019, 7 GW in 2019-2020, 8 GW in 2020-2021 and 9 GW in 2021-2022, to reach 40 GW at the end of March 2022.

The States with the largest capacity additions would be Maharashtra with 4.7 GW, Uttar Pradesh with 4.3 GW, Tamil Nadu with 3.5 GW and Gujarat with 3.2 GW. Karnataka and Rajasthan would have to install 2.3 GW each, while Madhya Pradesh would have to install 2.2 GW and West Bengal 2.1 GW. Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Telangana would have to install 2 GW each.

India has set its renewable energy capacity addition target by 2022 to 175 GW, including 100 GW of solar PV, 60 GW of wind power, 10 GW of biomass-fired power and 5 GW of hydropower.
