India approves NTPC's plans to develop 15 GW of solar projects

The Indian government has approved plans by state-owned power generation company NTPC to develop up to 15,000 MW of grid-connected solar PV power projects, under the National Solar Mission. The projects will be executed by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN), in three phases. Some solar projects will be bundled with unallocated thermal power. The bundled power will be allotted to various states providing land for setting up the solar power projects and to states which would purchase a major portion of the bundled solar power and ensure connectivity to the solar power project. NTPC, through NVVN, will select the project developers through an international competitive bidding process; developers will allot capacity to each state.

The first phase of the National Solar Mission (2010-2013) had set a target of 1,100 MW for grid-connected solar capacity; 1,685 MW were installed under various scheme. The second phase (April 2013-March 2017) aims to add 9,000 MW of solar capacity, including 3,000 MW under central schemes and 6,000 MW under state initiatives and other local mechanisms.
