Greece, Cyprus and Israel continue talks on East Med gas pipe project

Greece, Cyprus and Israel are discussing ways to develop the East Med gas pipeline project that would deliver gas from eastern Mediterranean fields off Cyprus and Israel to European markets through Greece. A feasibility study will be presented in October 2016. The interconnection project could consist of a 1,300 km-long gas pipeline, able to transport up to 16 bcm/year of gas.

The east Mediterranean basin is estimated to hold 10,000 to 15,000 bcm of gas reserves, including the giant Leviathan, Tamar and newly discovered Daniel East and West fields off Israel's coast. Israel has discovered more than 900 bcm of gas offshore with undiscovered prospects estimated at 2,200 bcm. The country is considering various options to export gas, including the East Med gas pipeline to Greece, a pipeline to Turkey or pipeline exports to Egypt, where the gas would be liquefied and exported to Europe and other markets.
