France commits to cut nuclear share in power mix to 50% by 2025

The French National Assembly (lower house of the Parliament) has adopted the first article of the law on the energy transition, that stipulates that the share of nuclear in the power generation mix shall decrease from 75% to 50% by 2025. As well, energy consumption shall halve between 2012 and 2050; an intermediate target was set for 2030 (-20% reduction in energy consumption). Greenhouse gas emissions shall be reduced by 40% between 1990 and 2030 (halved between 1990 and 2050), while renewable energy production shall reach 32% of final energy consumption by 2030. The new legislation on the energy transition, including measures for buildings, transport and waste recycling, is expected to be voted on 14 October 2014.

Meanwhile, the proposed ecological tax on heavy trucks (so called "ecotaxe"), that was expected to enter into force in July 2013 and was postponed twice before being replaced by a "transit fee", has been suspended sine die. The transit fee, expected on 1 January 2015, had also been postponed to early 2015. The tax was estimated to raise €450m. A proposal to replace it by a tax on toll highway companies is under consideration, though difficult to implement.
