European Union on track to meet its 20% renewable target by 2020

According to the Renewable energy progress report released by the European Commission, the European Union is on track to meet its 20% renewable energy targets by 2020, with a projected share of 15.3% of renewables in the gross final energy consumption in 2014. Where transports are concerned, renewables should account for 5.7% of transport consumption in 2014: achieving the 10% target is challenging but remains feasible.

So far, 26 member states have met their 2011/2012 targets and 25 are expected to meet their 2013/2014 renewable energy national targets.

According to the report, the development of renewables in the EU contributed to reduce EU demand of fossil fuels by 116 Mtoe in 2013 and to avoid 388 Mt of CO2 emission in 2013 (326 Mt in 2012). Some countries already met their 2020 target in 2013, such as Bulgaria (19%, compared to a target of 16%), Estonia (26%, above the 25% target), Lithuania (23%), Romania (24%), or Sweden (52%, above the 49% target). Some other remains far from the target, such as the Netherlands or the United Kingdom (respectively 4.5% and 5.1% in 2013, compared to targets of 14% and 15%).
