Colombia's coal production rose by 3.6% in 2014 to more than 88 Mt

According to the National Mining Agency (ANM) of Colombia, coal production increased by 3.6% in 2014, from nearly 85.4 Mt in 2013 to 88.6 Mt in 2014. Three companies accounted for more than 80% of domestic production: Cerrejon, Colombia's largest coal miner, produced 34.4 Mt, followed by Drummond with 26.8 Mt and Prodeco (Glencore Xstrata) with 12.6 Mt.

Colombia's coal sector is affected by decreasing coal prices in Europe, its main market: coal prices reached US$55.6/ton in January 2015, their lowest level in nine years (up to US$63.65/ton in mid-February). New environmental regulations on polluting methods to load coal on to ships have forced Colombia Natural Resources (a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs) to shut its coal export terminal and Drummond to suspend exports during a couple of months in 2014. In addition, a recent court ruling has banned the overnight use of its biggest coal railway, the Fenoco railway, operated by thee miners accounting for half of the production (Drummond, Prodeco and CNR).
