CGNPC starts building 1 GW Hongyanhe-6 nuclear reactor (China)

China General Nuclear Power Group (CGNPC) has launched the construction of the sixth reactor at the Hongyanhe nuclear power plant in the Liaoning province of China. The Hongyanhe nuclear power plant consists of six CPR-1000 units, rated 1,000 MW each. The first two reactors were commissioned in June 2013 and May 2014, respectively, while units 3 and 4 are under construction and should be commissioned in 2015 (unit-3 was connected to the grid earlier in March 2015). Construction started on the fifth reactor in March 2015; the unit is expected to be commissioned in November 2019 and will be followed by unit 6 in August 2020. When fully operational, the six units are expected to generate 45 TWh/year of electricity, avoiding the consumption of 15 Mt/year of coal and the emissions of 40 MtCO2eq/year.

CGNPC currently has 13 operational nuclear reactors in China, representing a total capacity of 13.8 GW, and has a further 13 units (15.6 GW) under construction.
