CEZ considers buying Enel's 66% stake in Slovak power utility

Czech national power utility CEZ is considering acquiring the 66% stake in Slovakia's largest power utility Slovenské Elektrarne held by Enel and put for sale in July 2014. Slovenské Elektrarne owns power stations with a total installed capacity of 5,700 MW, with a balanced generation mix comprising nuclear, hydroelectric and conventional thermal facilities, and is the leading power generator in Slovakia with a market share of close to 80%.

ČEZ started an external growth process in the second half of the 2000s, focusing on Central Europe (Poland,Slovakia, Hungary and Germany) and South-Eastern Europe (Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Serbia and Albania). Over the last few years, the company has been suffering successive setbacks, especially in Albania (international arbitration over the electricity distribution company acquired by CEZ) and in Bulgaria (tensions over the distribution market and power plant placed in reserve in 2012-2013). The acquisition of Slovenské Elektrarne, welcomed by Slovak Prime Minister, would strengthen the interconnection of the Czech and Slovak energy networks.
