Cameroon creates power transmission network operator Sonatrel

Cameroon has created a new company, Société nationale de transport de l’électricité (Sonatrel), that will be in charge of the operation of the country's power transmission network. The company will operate, maintain and develop the public grid and its interconnections with neighbouring grids.

National power generation company Eneo (former AES-Sonel) will now focus on power generation and sales, EDC will focus on dam operations and will receive water right payments from Eneo and the AER will develop rural electrification, while the Arsel will continue to monitor the power sector.

Eneo has two independent transport and distribution networks, the Southern Interconnected Network (90% of energy consumption) and the Northern Interconnected Network; other areas of the country (in particular the East) which are not connected to those networks are supplied by independent diesel power plants. Investment needs are huge, with more than 50% of pylons needing to be replaced; according to Eneo, about FCFA 700bn (US$1.2bn) will be required to modernise the power transmission network in Cameroon over the next ten years.
