EDP is the historical power utility in Portugal but it also operates in Europe (the Iberian Peninsula remaining its main market), Latin America and North America. It has activities in Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Poland and Brazil, and also has shareholdings in other countries, namely Guatemala, Cape Verde and Macao. At the end of 2001, the EDP Group started to take positions in the Spanish market through HC Energia (HidroCantábrico or Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico) and finally reached a 97.5% share in HC Energia's capital. EDP also plays an important role in the Spanish gas sector, through a 64% shareholding in Naturgas, an important gas market operator.
