Highlights on EDP
EDP is the historical power utility in Portugal but it also operates in Europe (the Iberian Peninsula remaining its main market), Latin America and North America. It has activities in Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Poland and Brazil, and also has shareholdings in other countries, namely Guatemala, Cape Verde and Macao. It has recently reinforced its commitment in the gas sector and expands generation from the renewable sector, particularly wind power. In 2007, it acquired a wind energy company in the USA: Horizon Wind Energy (HWE).
EDP carries out its core business activities in the power and gas sector, mainly on the Iberian Peninsula where it is the third largest energy operator.
At the end of 2001, the EDP Group started to take positions in the Spanish market through HC Energia (HidroCantábrico or Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico) and finally reached a 97.5% share in HC Energia's capital. EDP also plays an important role in the Spanish gas sector, through a 64% shareholding in Naturgas, an important gas market operator.
