CEZ a.s. was created in 1992 as the State-owned electricity company in Czech Republic, whose main activities are power and heat production and sales. The merger of five distribution companies with the power utility gave birth to the CEZ Group in 2003.
CEZ is vertically integrated: it owns SD, the largest Czech mining company, covering 60% of its lignite needs, accounts for more than 70% of the country's generation, owns the transmission grid (the TSO company CEPS is 100% owned by the Czech State) and 5 out of 8 distribution companies (accounting for more than 60% of the customers).
The Group aims at becoming one of the largest energy utility in Central Europe and is pursuing an internationalisation strategy through acquisitions in European countries.
