  • Institutions & Energy Policy

The Ministry of Energy and Minerals (MEM - formerly Ministry of Oil and Gas)manages the hydrocarbons sector.

The Ministry of Housing, Electricity & Water (MHEW) is responsible for the planning and management of the electricity sector.

  • Energy Supply

    Oil:

Oil production rebounded to its 2019 level of 47.7 Mt in 2021, after a 2% drop in 2020. According to preliminary data, oil production increased by 10% in 2022. Previously, it had remained stable between 2015 and 2019. It increased rapidly from 2009 to 2015 (4.4%/year) as a result of enhanced oil recovery techniques and the development of new fields, in particular Western Bukhad and Makhaizna.

  • Energy Prices

    Oil:

The prices of gasoline and diesel almost doubled between 2015 and 2022 to 0.60 US$/l and 0.67 US$/l, respectively. This is a result of the 2016 deregulation of oil prices. In 2020, prices decreased by 10%, following international prices, and stood at US$ 0.49/l and US$ 0.59/l, respectively.

  • Energy Consumption

Total consumption of energy per capita amounts to 5.3 toe (2021), i.e. three times higher than the global average. Per capita electricity consumption reached 6.8 MWh in 2021.

  • Issues & Prospects

    Gas:

The political objective of reducing the country's dependence on oil, as well as the forecasts regarding the depletion of the reserves in the next twenty years, have led the Sultanate to focus on the development of gas.
